Last week, I talked about Blue Prince. On Tuesday night, I stayed up waaaaaaaaaaay too late and I found Room 46 and got the closing animation and tied off one of the loose ends of the pieces of lore I happened to stumble across in one of the bedrooms (and in the attic).
The finally opening the door and going in the room was *GREAT*. The surprise of that loose end being tied off was even better. I put the game down and thought “what a freakin’ satisfying game!” and couldn’t believe how good it was.
I managed to leave it alone for a day or so.
Then I went back and explored some more and, quite honestly, I’d say that beating the game only gives you about half the content.
Let me give a small example (with the tiniest of spoilers). You can occasionally find an item that gives you a permanent upgrade to one of your rooms at random. The upgrade isn’t gamebreaking or anything like that, it’s just a slight tweak that can help a bit. For example: there is a room called “Spare Room”. It’s bland. It doesn’t have anything in it. It’s got one entrance and one exit. Or two entrances. However that works. If you upgrade this room, you can upgrade it to “Spare Greenroom” where it’s still a bland room but, sometimes, it gets stuff in it that you sometimes find in green rooms. You can upgrade it to “Spare Bedroom” and it becomes a pink room that sometimes has stuff that you find in bedrooms. Or you can make it a “Spare Hallway” and, you guessed it, it becomes a room where you sometimes find hallway stuff. There are a handful of things in the game that count how many rooms of which type you have… the Spare Room doesn’t count as anything, but the Spare Bedroom counts as a bedroom for the purposes of this little ticker.
So I’ve been running around trying to find these permanent upgrade items.
There’s a puzzle that involves finding every song sheet in the game. I have found every song sheet and examined them and, yep, they contain a hint.
There are puzzles that are still vexing me. Some rooms have chess pieces in them. For example, the Nook has a Rook. What is the significance of this? I have no idea! I mean, I think I might have a small idea… But I, of course, didn’t write down which rooms have which chess pieces in them as I was playing the first several dozen times. Now I’m keeping an eye open for each one as I see them and writing it down.
And there’s a very particular puzzle that involves finding one room and putting another room next to it. And I am pulling my hair out trying to get these two rooms next to each other!
Seriously, there are *SO MANY* little nooks and crannies in this game.
It is *SOOOOO* good.
Seriously, if you like puzzlers at all, this game will give you so very many endorphins.
I cannot recommend this game enough.
So… what are you playing?
