The lower cartoon appeared in the Chicago Tribune during the 1912 Bull Moose convention, which was held in Chicago. On July 6, 1912, the Chicago Cubs had been 15.5 games out of first place in the National League. By August 5, when the convention started, they had closed the gap to 8.5 games.

Despite the optimism of the out-of-towner in the upper cartoon, it was indeed the Giants who went to the 1912 World Series, which they lost to the Boston Red Sox. The Cubs closed the gap to 4 games by the end of August, then faded to finish in third with a 91-59 record.Report
