OpenAI Introduces Her.
Some idle thoughts:
That is a fun and flirty voice.
Some more: There are a lot of guys out there who will fall in love with this voice.
Some more: There are a lot of guys who are completely immune to this voice.
And my basic thoughts are that the people who are 100% going to fall for her fit a particular profile: High verbal skills and yet likely to have some social awkwardness (if not being somewhere on the spectrum).
The guys who will be immune? Somewhat lower verbal skills. Better at navigating social areas.
Which tells me that this will do a great job of cutting off a large number of relationships. If 80% of emotional needs can be met by this simulacrum of a person, why bother interacting with a person? I don’t know about you but I have had relationships where 80% of my emotional needs were *NOT* met. Those relationships ended. Some healthily, some less so. Those weird and botched relationships helped me become who I am and helped me figure out how to be someone who could find someone who would exceed 80% of those emotional needs (and do what I could to exceed meeting 80% of their own).
Something like this would be better than those strange and weird relationships that met only 50% or 60% of emotional needs.
Which means that there are people who will never leave their relationship with GPT 4o (and GPT 5 and, heck, by the time GPT 6 shows up, Katie bar the door).
Worse than that, the bot can do ASMR:

This is how the world ends.
This is how the world ends.
This is how the world ends.
Not with a bang, but with a whisper.

NPR is reporting: Scarlett Johansson says she is ‘shocked, angered’ over new ChatGPT voice.
I, personally, get more of a “Jan from Toyotathon” vibe from the voice than ScarJo, but, of course, you couldn’t hear that voice and *NOT* think of the movie “Her”.Report
