Curley probably refers to Jack Curley, a promoter. He’s the guy who brought pro wrestling to the cities and his organization is probably the precursor to the NWA.
The reason he got into pro wrestling was because he got squeezed out of boxing after the Jack Johnson title loss to Jess Willard… right around the time of this cartoon. Some theorize that Johnson took a dive.
So… yeah. The sports fans would be ticked off but good.
Also, Europe had moved on from the whole “Archduke” thing and was really getting into this whole “World War” idea.
