Weekend Plans Post: Nothing Is Happening
One of Maribou’s besties is coming over for breakfast on Saturday. This happens every other Saturday (circumstances permitting) on the opposite Saturdays from when we have a game night. I generally make a vaguely traditional breakfast… something like eggs and bacon and biscuits and some berries for color but sometimes I mix it up with sausage or croissants or toasted baguettes or something like that.
I mean, it’s nothing particularly exotic and the eggs are scrambled so it’s not particularly difficult but one thing that I have learned after years of cooking is if there are two identical dishes out there, the one that was made by somebody else is the one that is going to just taste better. This lets me not freak out too much about “only” making scrambled eggs and breakfast meats and some bread/butter/jam.
Oh my gosh. A plate of hot food. OH MY GOSH SOME CAFFEINE!!!
I used to think that I had to do something fancy like frying up some migas with homemade ceviche or figure out some way to make pancakes in a rice cooker (you get some *SERIOUSLY* thick pancakes this way) but enough time has passed that I know that… eh. Biscuits from a can are going to be about 95% as exciting for about 10% of the effort.
Just make sure the berries are fresh. Hey, mix up some blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries and it looks fancy schmancy to boot. Maybe I’ll pick up some mint sprigs on the way home tonight for tomorrow morning’s presentation… seriously, a pile of 12 berries is nice but a pile of 12 berries with a mint leaf on top? That’s some Michelin stuff right there.
And that’s it. That’s the big thing happening this weekend. I’m making breakfast for company on Saturday morning and I’ll probably make… oh… sausage links and scrambled eggs (with sprinkled cheese, of course) and biscuits from a can with butter and peach preserves and some mixed berries.
And everything other than that is pretty much *NOTHING*. Sure, there’s a Costco trip in there and it’s laundry time again (especially with the snowstorm earlier in the week… clearing the walk requires an entire outfit change!) but, other than that, a nice quiet weekend.
So… what’s on your docket?

yeah, taking a rare weekend totally off. Zoom knitting group later today, but first going to make a run to Target and JoAnn’s – been at least six weeks since I’ve been out of town and I need to get out. My brain needs time away from Systematic Botany and I finally got far enough ahead in prepping lectures and labs I feel okay not working this weekend.Report
I took both yesterday and Monday off, yesterday for fun (did a visit to a friend’s to check out his sound system and whiskey collection), Monday to finish cleaning out our office. Seems that come late June or early July the crib will need to come back out, which we are of course very excited about. Today I will brave presidents day mattress sales since my wife has determined that the current one has expired, tomorrow in exchange for assistance getting the big furniture out of the office I will help a good friend move into his new apartment. Hopefully my knees can still handle it, and doubtlessly they will be oiled with some cheap beer, just like the old college days, for good or ill.Report
