Weekend Plans Post: New Year’s Eve
I saw one of those posts on Facebook that had been shared a kabillion times that said “I don’t know what I’m going to wear to my living room on New Year’s Eve. I might not even go.”
I felt that.
I talked with Maribou about the last time we stayed up to watch the new year roll in and I suggested 2020 turning into 2021. After a year of Safer At Home, not visiting friends or family except for a couple of gatherings outside at a friend’s porch and a Thanksgiving dinner where we sat outside next to an open window while we yelled our conversations inside, I remembered walking out into the snowy street and watching them shoot fireworks off of Pike’s Peak.
Maribou told me that we did do that, but they did that at 9PM instead of midnight because, hey, the people who set off the fireworks ain’t getting any younger. So we watched the fireworks at 9.
Which was nice. Got us to bed at a reasonable hour.
As for this year, the question was “what are we doing for NYE?” and it turns out that that’s a gaming night.
So we’re going over to our buddy’s for gaming. I don’t know if we’ll make it to midnight, though. It’s different at this age.
Though let’s hope that the worst part of 2023 is better than the best part of 2022.
And there’s a hand, my trusty feire,
And gie’s a hand o’ thine;
And we’ll tak a right gude‐willie waught,
For auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint‐stowp,
And surely I’ll be mine;
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
So… what’s on your docket?

I have a friend who cooks a surf and turf dinner on NYE every year, and I haven’t missed in in years. Plus, the forecast is about 50 degrees warmer than last weekend.Report
Just got the call: They’re making steaks.
So I’m making Peach Cobbler.Report
Home before 10, if only just barely.
Now to come down a little bit and see if I can’t be asleep by 11.
Happy New Year, everyone!Report
I ate crabs. Now it is January 1st where I am.Report
We had a nice dinner of french bread and cheese, as is our post becoming parents new years tradition. My son is asleep, after several spirited games of uno. I’m now finishing up the Guillermo del Toro Cabinet of Curiosities series on Netflix. My wife was with me but has gone upstairs, since she struggles with scary shows involving children these days (honestly I do too),
and this last one involves a haunting by the spirit of a little boy. However I will soldier on. There’s no point in going to sleep since the entire zip code will likely be exploding with fireworks in about 75 minutes.
Even when I partied hard I always found new years to be a combination of amateur night and disappointing, with a whole lot of planning and drama for not much payoff. I am much happier keeping it low key.Report
