Weekend Plans Post: A Quick Return to 2020
Last week was the week that I had taken off entirely because, after a very successful Tuesday spent with friends, I got an email on Wednesday morning telling me that my friends had woken up feeling cruddy and tested for covid and, wouldn’t you know it, they tested positive.
So we cancelled *EVERYTHING*. I left the house twice: both times to go jogging. I stayed 6 feet away from everybody but Maribou at all times (except the occasional car that drove past) and otherwise didn’t see a soul. Spent time asleep in bed, cooking in the kitchen, or goofing off in the basement. Just like March 2020. Except, you know, this time it wasn’t *THAT* bad. It was kinda nice.
So I tested on Wednesday (negative), Friday (negative), and Sunday (negative). I went back to work on Monday as usual and tested again on Tuesday (negative) and skipped the climbing gym and then, on Thursday, figured that I’d take ONE LAST TEST.
And it was negative too. So even Maribou agrees that I successfully dodged it. All that to say: GET YOUR BIVALENT BOOSTER. IT HELPS YOU BE LUCKIER.
My friends had very mild cases. Like, they were knocked out for a day but, lucky for them, it was a different day for each of them and the kids rebounded like it was just another case of the crud that kiddos get once school is back in session. So… we got lucky. Which means that this weekend will be one that involves catching up on all of the stuff we didn’t do last weekend because we were self-quarantined.
A trip to Costco, a trip to the grocery store, and laundry, laundry, laundry. We figure it’s time to switch from the linen sheets to the flannel ones and, goodness, that *ALWAYS* adds an additional 3-4 loads to the chore.
Oh, and we’ll finally celebrate birthdays.
So… what’s on your docket?

FOR ONCE I AM DOING SOMETHING MILDLY EXCITING.
We got a “surprise” mid-fall break day today (wasn’t on the calendar at first, I didn’t know about it until 2 weeks ago) and I speculated on Twitter what I should do, then a friend of mine in Louisiana turned out to be free today, so I am driving 3 hours to meet up “midway” (less than midway for her, more for me, but the “midway” that has the most interesting things to do) and at least going to a yarn shop and out for lunch.
I have not seen her in over 2 years. Because pandemic, you know. So in a few minutes I have to get dressed, should hit the road no later than 7:30 in order to get there by 11.
I would not drive 3 hours just for shopping. But to get to see a friend? Sure.Report
Wonderful. I hope it’s a blast.Report
That’s awesome. Enjoy yourself!Report
Went to doctor yesterday for 50,000 mile checkup. I need to schedule a fluid change. Never had one before.
Also got my first shingles shot. After an hour, there was soreness at injection site and after two hours there was light brain fog.
This morning, woke up at 5 feeling feverish. Ugh.
At least I didn’t wreck a Saturday again.Report
You got the two-shot one (Shingrix)? I still haven’t gotten that, and it’s about the dumbest thing I ever flaked on.Report
I got the second vax and saw I could also get my other Shingrix shot so I combined them… the pharmacist was like, “Uh, Dude… you sure?”
Carry on my good man, carry on.
Whelp… I don’t usually get any sort of reaction to things like that, but I definitely felt it that time.Report
“If you don’t mind, could you also drag my immune system into an alley and bludgeon it with a rebar?”Report
Shingles shot #2 kicked my ass for a day. Fine the day after.Report
I got the first of the two-shot.
And my brain is fogged. I called in sick. I want to play a game.
I have not yet played a game.Report
My “fluid change” is scheduled for two weeks from now. I did the shingles vax earlier in the year. The fluid is more viscous and kind of hurts going in. I remember the 2nd being more uncomfortable than the first. I got the flu and the bivalent together a couple of weeks ago. No brain fog, but I regularly don’t suffer from effects like that.Report
We didn’t accomplish much over the last couple weekends due to COVID, so this weekend is catching up. There’s some unfinished yard work (I hurt my back last time I mowed, and didn’t get everything done), lots of house cleaning, some proper grocery shopping, and finishing up a few things left over from when we did the bedroom floors (patching a small hole in the wall I made when removing a baseboard and putting down color-matched caulk where the baseboards don’t cover the floor gap).
Hopefully we’ll be able to squeeze in some time to relax and do some things that are enjoyable to, but I don’t have anything planned in that regard.Report
Good luck. Are you still hit with the fatigue?Report
I don’t think so, though I might find out differently when I start trying to do stuff. I still have lingering bronchitis. My first time with this, it took weeks before my lungs felt normal. I will definitely prioritize the task list in case we run out of steam before we finish.Report
We finished about half the stuff on the list. Though feeling a lot better than the previous weekend, my wife and I are still not back to 100%. At least we have less to do next weekend.Report
My shingles shot was worse than my covid boosters. Covid boosters ruined my Friday nights and pretty much all day Saturday but Sunday was back to normal.
Got my Shingles shot on Thursday, felt fatigue on Thursday night, was feverish on Friday, NO GAS IN THE CAR AT ALL on Saturday, and Sunday finally allowed me to go for a short jog.
I mean, get vaccinated, etc… but I am going to start getting these shots on a Monday.Report
I’m currently getting nailed by Covid. I think I have pneumonia along with it. Doc prescribed me Paxlovid and steroids. Hopefully that turns things around.Report
Ugh. Good luck. Some co-workers got Paxlovid and it worked for them. It turned “truly awful” into “merely crappy”. I hope it works out.Report
Hiking around Cuyahoga Valley NP today, brought some matches to test the river. A bit on the cold side, but the colors are incendiary.Report
LOL. I hate that I get that allusion. (It happened when I was a few months old, not quite sure if my parents had moved there yet).
I used to run around in CVN(RA)P a lot when I was a kid, when it was still a Recreation Area. Also hung out in Summit Metroparks a lot; Deep Lock Quarry was my favorite.Report
I was surprised that the National Park didn’t have an information center with background on that history. The Cuyahoga caught fire in ’69, and the next year was the first Earth Day and the Environmental Protection Agency was formed.
We pretty much stuck to the National Park, our favorite location was the Brandywine Falls, pretty nice for this time of year.Report

And the Lord can make you turn
And the Lord can make you overflow
But the Lord can’t make you burn”Report
