This is why everyone in the North east converted from coal to fuel oil (and/or natural gas) as soon as possible, (though gas was a bit later) – for the convenience. Being better for the environment (relatively speaking) was a good benefit, but one not mandated for another generation or two.Report
My small town Iowa grandparents still had a coal-fired furnace when I was small. I could hardly wait until I was deemed old enough to go to the basement and shovel coal when we went to visit at Christmas. That lasted just until I was so deemed, and found out how much work it is, and how hot.Report
