On “Defending the tea parties, ctd.

Even those jobs you mention today takes some years of post-high school schooling. I guess what I mean is that the apprentice type way of doing what you write about isn't as prevalent anymore. And with automation, there are a lot less of those jobs.

On “These aren’t the Republicans you’re looking for

You mean the same chump who spurned Obama's offer to be Commerce Secretary?

"

They are actually voting the way their constituents want.

Are they? I'd say they aren't. They are corporate whores. What excuses a Dan Lipinski? Melissa Bean? Jim Cooper? Or "Helicopter" Harold Ford, Jr.(when he was in the House)? They are all in liberal districts. Yet are some of the worst reactionary Democrats.

On “The Problem with Blue-Doggism (Hint: It isn’t the Blue Dogs)

The problem with the Blue Dogs is that they are frauds. Most, if not all, of them claim to be fiscal conservatives. How many of them voted against Bush's wars because he didn't pay for them? None!! That's how many. So they are frauds.

On “Free Douthat

Oh, brother!! Do I need to reset my snark detector? Because the only good thing that could come of Ross getting his own NYT blog is more "chunky" Reese Witherspoon comments and the hilarity that would ensue. It would be the unintentional comedic gift that keeps on giving.

On “From reading Twitters and a few other places

Exactly!! While it wasn't as brutally bad as his earlier columns, Douthat still missed the point by a mile. Then again, the good thing about art of any kind is that people get out of it what they want to.

On “would Megan McArdle have saved Deamonte Driver’s life if it meant expanding government?

Great post, Freddie. Of course Megan won’t call his mother to defend her opinion. Megan, with her private high school/Ivy League college/MBA education pleads that she has both known true poverty and has been one of the sick and uninsured – and implausibly notes that it made her more opposed to a government guarantee of care.

Has she ever specifically stated why it made her more adverse to Gov't run health care? Or is she just blowing smoke out her rear end? I wonder if she's been reading any of the stories that have been posted by Sully and his helpers.

"

Your lack of imagination, or knowledge, of what a free market can accomplish doesn’t necessitate a jungle in the absence of confiscatory taxes.

The present financial crisis showed us just what a clusterfuck the "free" market can provide. How do you like those apples?

"

Many opponents have given good reasons for opposing government reform and have offered altenatives, it’s just that the proponents aren’t listening.

Can you name those opponents and specifically what they are proposing?

On “be true to your school?

Son of a bitch!! I think I've seen it all now. A non-sports blog with a post about the Mighty Whale!. Ron Francis. Mike Liut. Those were the days. As far as your post. It is obvious that Karmanos had little or no intention of keeping the team in Hartford, sadly.

On “Sarah Sarah Quite Contraire

Matthew Dallman:
Except that Obama never resigned from office before he was elected Preaident. Hell, he even showed up for some votes. Palin could have filled out the rest of her term then ran(it'd still give her 2 years). Don't you think Pawlenty, Mittens and Col. James Braddock's BFF will run those "Cut and Run" ads against Sarah? That's what is going to kill her. How many people will the Presidency when they don't already hold some political office? Nixon? Ray-gun? Eisenhower? What about before Ike? It can be done, just not that often.

On “Getting Hungry

As well as Dempsey played the last three games, Donovan was nothing short of superb. Hopefully, Donovan’s widely-expected return to the European leagues this fall will succeed in a way that his previous adventures in Germany did not.

Donovan never wanted to go the first time. I remember reading an article about him where he was more comfortable chilling in Southern California. I won't say he was lazy. Just that he didn't seem up for the better competition Europe offered(for a variety of reasons). Maybe this time will be different.

On “the big tent

Is this not, in the end, a call for a new Contact with America? An appeal to a re-Gingriched right?

Did the Contract for America really help the Republicans regain the House? And didn't Newt just disregard most(if not 98%) of it once they came to power?

On “Sunday Poem Series

I never "got" Ginsberg. It's great that you published Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night. Of course, everyone interprets it in their own way.

On “Thoughts on the Champions League Final

Will:
I agree with you. I remember a time(15 to 20 years ago) when teams like PSV Eindhoven used to be really good. When was the last time you heard a peep from the Dutch League? I can't remember. The thing that struck me about the game Wednesday was how ManU controlled the game the first ten minutes until Barca scored, and they never recovered after that. The balloon was popped.

On “goodbye, cruel league

I watched most of the game. What did I miss? Do you think the refs were in King James back pocket? If so, we all know that the NBA wants a Kobe/King James final. And that the teams aren't doing much to help.

On “Who are you going to believe, the NBA or your lying eyes?

Of course you know why it happened. The NBA dearly wants a Kobe vs. LeBron Finals. They will stop at nothing to get it. Do you really think the NBA wants an Orlando vs. Denver Finals? I know it would mean Dwight Howard vs. Carmelo but still. Every sports show on radio and TV admits the NBA wants a King James/Kobe Final.

On “secrets and substance

Ottovbvs:
What has Reid accomplished in the Senate? Very little. He can't even get Dawn Johnsen confirmed. How sad is that?

"

Michael:
Nancy has one big problem. She can't seem to control Steny Hoyer. The Democratic leadership in the House is old and corrupt. We need new blood(which doesn't include Rahm coming back to the House in a few years). It is obvious why Reid, Pelosi and Hoyer occupy the posts they do. Campaign cash(which Hoyer spreads around alot better than Pelosi). What we don't need though is Blue Dogs like Hoyer and his ilk running the place. They'd just as soon cave to Republicans on everything(like Reid already does). In the end, the Republicans are the ones that blew it. The Democrats just fell into regaining the majority. There is a good reason Will Rogers said what he did and it applies as much now as it ever did.

On “Abu-Jamal and the Costs of Reflexive Anti-Leftism

One thing I’m sure of is that a judge who was member of the Fraternal Order of Police should never have presided over a cop killing case.

Aren't most judges members? Or at least honorary? At the least, they are super sympathetic to cops no matter what.

On “A Ghost on Aspen Street

When you write, “That’s where we keep our national heroes, after all, when don’t need them anymore,” you are making a judgment not supported by this experience.

I can't speak for him, but I think his point was that we shouldn't treat our veterans that way. We are failing them when they live on the streets or we don't get them the help they deserve.

On “Whenever you say “Nobody on our side does that,” you’re wrong.

Of course he isn't. If anything, Kaus is a self-hating liberal(If he ever was a liberal).

On “Comments

Hopefully this works.

On “away from Joe=towards success?

Noonan:
Why do you think that people like Bill "William the Bloody" Kristol were so adamant that Clinton's health care overhaul be killed?

On “Jindal: debt is bad when we say it is

Don't forget, Jindal was in Congress when the Republicans were running up deficits like crazy. So he's your typical hypocritical Republican.
