On “Wednesday Writs: Schoolboy Innuendo Edition

L2: Many Evangelical Christian and Ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups have been meeting en mass in defiance of the ban. Israel is also having a lot of trouble getting the Ultra-Orthodox to accept social distancing. My guess is that the government is going to win these cases on the grounds that social distancing rules are laws of general applicability rather than something meant to discriminate against religion.

I posted this earlier but New York already busted the first Covid-19 speakeasy this week. There were dozens of people found in a Brooklyn bar called Miami II drinking and gambling.

On “Joe Biden: Staying Alive

BIden's platform is way to the left of Bill Clinton. The Democratic Party of the 1990s is very different from the Democratic Party of today and no Democratic President was going to carry Mississippi. The regular folks that believe the Democratic Party isn't talking to them are just really angry that they aren't the default and need to share space with other groups.

"

They most obviously do not. There is this weird sort of idea in American politics that the Democratic Party doesn't really stand for anything. Rather it is just a bunch of cynical pols pretending to be liberal and the dopes that vote for them. The Republicans and the politically impotent far left, now they stand for something. But the Democratic Party does not and nobody can really be proud voting for them.

"

Plus, I'm pretty sure that Biden's base of middle class and senior citizen African-Americans are the least obsessed with cool in the Democratic Party. Sander's base is the most cool obsessed, followed by Warren, and then nearly everybody else.

"

39, but this has been going on for longer since I was alive. It started with Nixon's 1968 campaign at least.

"

I also think the Democratic Party wanted a President that was capable of at least appearing empathetic and decent or better yet actually empathetic and decent. Joe Biden is at his heart, an old school avuncular Irish pol. The type that would slap your back, shake your hand hard, and ask how things are doing with your spouse and kids. His speech in response to Covid-19 had a very fire side chat level of comfort.

"

The Republicans danced to the Macarena at their 1996 convention to, George.

"

The issue is that young people generally don't vote even when politicians speak to their concerns. I've been voting regularly since I was eighteen but that makes me unusual rather than the norm. Sanders entire strategy was that he would speak to the concerns of young people and they would come out and vote for him in the primary. It did not work. They rallied, tweeted, and went on social media but they didn't haul their asses to the primaries and caucuses to vote for Sanders. The only real way that the concerns of young people will be taken seriously is if they vote. That is the most primary and basic act of getting your voice heard in a democracy.

Biden told his election team to ignore Twitter because they wouldn't make any friends on there and it would be worthless. That was literally the most intelligent choice any of the Democratic nominees. Every other candidate tried to court Twitter and the very online. The result was that they got their asses handed to them. Biden knew the demographics that would get their asses down to the primaries and caucuses, went after them, and got the nomination. That shows a lot more political savvy than anybody else.

Finally, the entire idea that the Democratic Party is a "fucking mess" and "thin skinned wanna-be cool posers" is a result of decades of propaganda from the Right and the Left. The Right because they obviously hate liberalism and the Left because they naively think that if they could destroy the Democratic Party that they would be the logical replacement. Different Democratic candidates have been offering distinct policy proposals to Covid-19 and other problems facing the nation. The Democratic Party is the only reason why the Covid-19 stimulus bill didn't end up a giant corrupt giveaway to the wealthy. Yet, it all seems for nothing because the people who hate the Democratic Party can't bring themselves to admit that the party they hate did anything good. Instead they want this mythical, magical left liberal party to appear out of nowhere and with no work that they have to do and make everything better.

It is Murc's law, that only the Democratic Party has agency, on crack. It forgives the Republicans and their voters for every disaster that they cause because they can't help it. The Left is hand waived of any responsibility. It is up the Democratic Party and it's voters to do everything

"

Shorter essay: I hate Trump but I don't want to vote for any Democratic politician because they are the crap team. I'll only vote for the Democratic Party if they enact my policy preferences to the detriment of what long term loyal Democratic Party members believe.

For fiction I'm reading the Borrowed, a Hong Kong crime novel, and for non-fiction the German Genius.

On “The Free Market Case for Staying the Eff Home

Fish you both. I am making an anodyne factual statement and both of you are giving at a maximum bad faith reading.

"

No, I do not. I'm just add evidence to Chip's statement that the mono-cultural arguments that some people make about why other countries have nice things and we do not is bunk.

"

China is an ethnically diverse state with dozens of non-Chinese ethnic groups like Koreans, Mongolians, Tibetans, and many others living in it. Plus, there are distinct minority groups among the Han Chinese like the Hakka and the Hui. There are about 300 million non-Han Chinese in China.

People in the West don't tend to recognize this because we think of diversity in terms of obvious to the eye type of diversity and phenotypes. In Asia and sub-Sahara Africa, this type of diversity is relatively rare but the different ethnic groups take their identity seriously.

On “It’s Not Time…Yet

Vox still naively believes we can get hundreds of millions of people to put up with social distancing and other methods recommended by public health experts for months at a time or longer. The medical experts might be right on what needs to be done but I really can't see so many people putting their normal life on hold for as long as they believe it needs to be done.

https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/3/26/21192211/coronavirus-covid-19-social-distancing-end

"

There isn't much evidence that getting Covid-19 and recovering from it gives you immunity. My argument was more like people will learn to live with Covid-19 in a rather fatalistic manner and get on with their life rather then change their life for a very long period of time.

"

Governments can always do the police and troops on the street asking for papers quarantine. France is apparently doing the traditional quarantine. I'm not sure whether our governments have the wherewithal to do this or how long they can enforce a police and soldier enforced quarantine before people start to rebel.

"

In the blue states, there have been moves to empty the prisons to avoid prison outbreaks and not put so many people in prisons.

"

I'm joining my brother. Nearly everybody is basing their response and what version of the medical reports to believe based on their ideological priors. Lots of libertarians were really advocating the this isn't as dangerous as we think Oxford report. The people on the left are arguing from the Imperial War College report and believe we can and will do shelter in place for twelve to eighteen months.

When infectious diseases, epidemics, and pandemics were more common, people mainly dealt with them by going on with their lives as normal. There were quarantines and occasional changes in pattern put people mainly went on with their lives. I think that will happen with Covid-19 if there isn't a vaccine soon. You aren't going to convince seven billion people to put their lives on hold for one and half years or more while scientists work on a cure.

On “Life Under Quarantine

You are just being a fishing troll at this point and you know it.

"

Well you take my arguments seriously or are you going to just go on with this Ken Burns shit because you don't have any better response to the evidence being used against you?

"

Adding evidence to my point, illegal dog walking markets are opening up in Spain so that people can get outside:

On “Class Action Being Filed Against Airbnb On Behalf Of Airbnb Hosts

Airbnb isn't necessarily new. Before World War I, it wasn't uncommon for people who owned or even rented homes to take on borders to earn some extra money. Especially if they lived in a summer resort area. The practice was eventually legislated of existence and people also started to earn enough not really to need to do this. Even before AirBnB, there was a thriving market in not necessarily legal rentals of apartments for people who were going to be away for a long time. When I stayed in Paris over Christmas-New Years once, it's how my friends and I stayed. It just was more complicated to arrange than with AirBnB.

My big problem with the pro-rideshare crowd is that they see ride shares as a good enough replacement for an actual public transportation system, which they don't like because they involve government and unions. A bunch of people using rideshare apps creates just as much congestion as the one person per car type driving that usually occurs. What you need is more rail transit because it's easier to get people on a train than a bus.

"

Rideshare apps were able to become a thing because taxi services were so hide bound and not necessarily great to their employees either. I'm as far from threatening as possible and I got into tremendous fights with cab drivers trying to get from Manhattan to my place in Brooklyn because the cabbies wanted to get a return fare.

Vox had a good article on why so many people are continuing on as normally as possible:
