This is why the Republican/ MAGA party can’t be discussed in conventional terms any longer.
Conventional politics assumes that both parties, both candidates, share a respect for and obedience to the Constitution and a respect for the general welfare for all the citizenry.

The Republicans no longer do- regardless of whether they support this policy or that, their insistence that only they be allowed to hold power makes them a mortal threat to our democracy.Report

The GOP’s disdain for the Constitution has been in full effect for years. From Reagan’s misadventures with Oliver North to Mitch McConnell tanking Merrick Garland’s SCOTUS nomination. This is not new news. And its deeply … frustrating … that only some conservatives are finally noticing.Report

For years Elite Lawyers and Sage Journalists and Duplicitous Politicians pretended “THE LAW” was a Platonic Ideal and philosophical foundation of the Universe. We, the People were slowly reaching the Ideal. Then the Post Nixon Republicans finally understood America and starting with Ronnie Raygun’s Regime continuing on to Traitor Trump decided the Law was whatever they said it was. The infamous Rule of Man instead of Rule of Law.

After his first selection by the Electoral College, Felon showed how hollow and fragile our institutions are. It’s been taken as a metaphysical certainty that the law along with norms, rules, morals, codes, and principles would restrain any one man and certainly an entire political party from embracing authoritarianism in the United States. But as I wrote, well before Trump was in the White house the GOP threw those conventions out the window.

Trump knew “THE LAW” could be flouted by the right man from his decades long crime spree starting in the 1970s, “When you’re a star they let you do it…” The United States Constitution is, as they say, the Highest Law of the Land… until someone comes along at just the right time and says “Nope”.

That’s The Law that Trump broke…
