Saturday Morning Gaming: Elden Ring is going to be releasing DLC on June 21st
Elden Ring came out back in February 2022 and I didn’t get around to playing it until around November 2022. When I did start playing it, I found it exceptionally difficult to the point where it wasn’t even fun. “This is the game of the year?”, I asked myself. One of my buds helpfully gave me advice that I followed and I discovered that the game was, yes, good. I just had to “get gud” first. It’s an absolutely huge game that kept getting bigger and bigger and then, when I finally beat it, I put it down with a huge and happy sigh.
I fiddled around with it a little after that… but I didn’t dive back into it. (I know folks who had to get every ending and went from wanting to beat it with sword/shield to beating it with a two-hander to beating it with magic to beating it with spears and… man. I just couldn’t do that.)
A year and a half later, we’re getting DLC for it… and, apparently, the DLC is *HUGE*. “Bigger than Caelid” is one of the reports that I saw. Remember the Deathroot guy? Yeah, his part of the map.
Looking at the trailer again, I think I see five bosses in there? And if they’re five bosses that are the quality of the bosses in the last game… Man.
I’m going to have to go back and beat the game again. Darn it.
I’m going to have to go back and get gud again.
So… what are you playing?

I beat Margit and I have come to terms with knowing that’s as far as I’m going to get.Report
I started over last night.
Golly, I suck at this game.Report
Revisited Diablo IV with their Season 4 updates.
They made some good quality of life changes… loot is a little too optimized… but at this point it’s more of a crafting game than a loot game. Loot serves to provide you recipes which you then craft on to gear. I’m ok with that.
Ultimately, though, none of the classes are fun to play… the only ability that’s fun/useful is your ‘core’ ability — which is heavily gated by punishing resource requirements — supposedly we’re supposed to use our builders to build resources, but that gameplay doesn’t work because your builders suuuuuuuck. Everything else is gated behind timers — most of which are *at least* 15 seconds upwards of 70 seconds. Just really bad game design.
If they completely rebuild their skill/resource management a’la POE and Last Epoch they might have a fun game.Report
I keep telling myself I will get back to Elden Ring and try to finish it. Maybe it will actually happen.
I have been doing a lot of dabbling lately, which is not my usual playstyle. I typically like to pick one game and focus on it, because dividing my time makes me less likely to finish anything. My main game has been Shin Megami Tensai V. It’s one of the more difficult JRPGs I have played. You can only save at save points, when the main character dies, it’s game over, and just about any combat can quickly turn bad with the wrong luck. It’s a fun game, but if I get overconfident, I can lose a lot of progress by not returning to a save point.
Some of the games I have dabbled with are Don’t Starve and (the original) Star Wars Battlefront 2. I also revisited Dave the Diver to experience the free Godzilla DLC, which is a pretty short bit of content.
I also decided to give Dragon’s Dogma another shot, which I had been considering a while, and I finally said “let’s go!”Report
