    Rope is excellent.

I can never tell if Brian De Palma is the best craftsman director of all time, or over-the-top.

I feel like I lost Se7en – I can’t watch Kevin Spacey any more. It’s a shame, too, because he was in a lot of good movies. Se7en was never a comfortable watch, but talk about expert directors, David Fincher is extraordinary. Actually, there’s probably a perfect midpoint between Fincher’s restraint and De Palma’s extravagance. But they both have an eye for detail.

Since I’m talking about directors, I just recently saw Mandy. It was unrated in the US but probably would have been NC-17 for sex, violence, nudity, violent nudity, sexual violence, and I don’t remember if the language was strong, but probably that too. Maybe the hardest thing about it to watch was the surrealism, which somewhat took an edge off the content, but only by making every shot uncomfortable. It was a work of genius, directed by Panos Cosmatos. I don’t know if he’ll ever be able to make more conventional movies, but the guy has a rare talent.Report

I really like the VVitch, but more as folk horror which takes place entirely within the Puritanical worldview of the New World — particularly the importance of the community of believers, and the dangers of the wilderness where one finds want and hardship, and the very real temptations of the powers of evil. What happens is completely predictable from a Puritan perspective. I also would give it a 4/5 because all of the production, acting and technical aspects are excellent; it just feels like the plot could have benefited from something more.Report

I saw the Witch in the theater and found it mesmerizing but have not watched it since. I’m a bit concerned it would not reward a repeat viewing especially on a couch where it isn’t really possible to be overwhelmed by the experience. That said everyone I know who has seen it still periodically references the ‘live deliciously’ line which I think is the sign of a movie that leaves a mark.Report

I have been watching / re-watching a whole lot of horror movies since the Pandemic started, some are more rewarding to rewatch than others. But I have found that a lot of the more recent indie horror movies show pretty well on my laptop with earbuds. These tend to have a muted color palette in the first place and a lot of quality sound design that I pick-up better that way.Report
