Rufus is a likeable curmudgeon. He has a PhD in History, sang for a decade in a punk band, and recently moved to NYC after nearly two decades in Canada. He wrote the book "The Paris Bureau" from Dio Press (2021).

  1. I feel like The Seventh Seal should be of the more approachable Bergmans. I’ve watched it a few times over the years, starting with a high school class in medieval history, but though there are parts I really enjoy, like Max von Sydow as the knight, it’s never really gelled for me.

    You make Persona sound fascinating, but I’m afraid seeing it directly, rather than through your eyes, would be similar.Report

    • I’m the same way with The Seventh Seal actually, and I am generally a big Bergman fan. It doesn’t quite click. I usually tell people to start with Wild Strawberries or Smiles of a Summer Night or even Winter Light, all of which are gorgeous films and deeply humane. The thing with Bergman too is you’ve probably seen his work filtered through other filmmakers like Woody Allen. Persona you’ve *almost* seen before if you’re fond of David Lynch. It’s just a little less weird.Report
