Ninja Sex Party: They’re Awesome
Ninja Sex Party is my favorite band of all time.
They’re a comedy rock band in the style of ‘80s rock. This means power ballads and slow jams, but with a comedic bent. Most of their songs are sexual in nature, usually involving the lead singer, stage name Danny Sexbang, failing to woo a woman. The other member of the band, stage name Ninja Brian, portrays a mute serial killer ninja with a silent intensity given off by just his eyes. Dan Avidan and Brian Wecht are truly awesome. Dan has a degree in marketing he never did anything with, while Brian has a PhD in theoretical physics which led him to a career as a professor until the band got big enough he could do it full time. Dan is also a member of one of my favorite YouTube Let’s Play channels, Game Grumps, which is essentially a podcast over video games.
Why is Ninja Sex Party my favorite band? Outside of the clever lyrics, which is par for the course for any comedy band or musician with staying power, it is Dan Avidan’s voice. He has one of the all time greatest singing voices, made even better by layering his audio. The band keeps advancing and innovating. Their first three albums did not include a backing band. They teamed up with Tupper Ware Remix Party (or TWRP) for their fourth album onward to add the funky groves of the Canadian electro funk band to Dan’s sick vocals.
The band is also fully independent, meaning they front the cost for everything. Their early music videos were made intentionally cheap looking as a means of making a joke out of their meager budgets. Their most recent music videos have seriously upped the production value with things like flame spurts, mild CGI, and elaborate sets. They are currently putting the finishing touches on their longest and most complex music video ever for the song “The Mystic Crystal.”
The band is incredibly prolific. Since its founding in 2009, the duo has released four original comedy albums, three cover albums, and three albums as part of their video game comedy supergroup Starbomb with Dan’s Game Grumps co-host Arin Hanson. On top of that, Dan has released one solo acoustic cover album, and a fifth original comedy album is expected before the end of the year. As of this writing, the band has released nearly fifty music videos.
Ninja Sex Party and Game Grumps have gotten me through some rough times. I discovered both of them in 2013, which was a low point in my life. Watching the daily output of Game Grumps and listening to Ninja Sex Party allowed me to forget my troubles for a brief period. Sometimes, to persevere, all I needed was a good laugh.
They have advanced so far as a band since I first came across them. Performing live on Conan, becoming Billboard’s top comedy band of the year in 2018, touring all over the world, and being the featured artist on several songs. I cannot wait to see what they pump out next.
