I always enjoy your analyses, Rufus. And now I think I need to get the Criterion streaming service, so I can discover or be discovered by new (to me) films and experiences.

I’m currently reading To The Lighthouse. An English prof spoke about it in a class. 20-25 years ago and his description always stuck. I bought the book years ago, but, not really being a big reader, never got around to it, then discarded it as we started downsizing (my wife and I a somehow brought a lot of crap into our marriage and continued acquiring more for many years).

I ordered the book a few weeks ago when I needed to get a new phone case for my daughter, and I’m 2/3 through it, now. It’s both what I was and not what I was expecting. I’m very glad I finally got around to reading it.Report

That’s good to hear! I have this weird relationship with To The Lighthouse. I also have intended to read it for some time, but every time I set out to do so, I can’t find it. Otherwise, I have no trouble finding it.

I’m continually amazed by the Criterion Channel. So much of it is new to me. I think maybe hardcore cinephiles have seen these movies, but I can usually watch 4 or 5 new-to-me movies a week there.Report

We had a homeless guy downtown. He was a “character”, I believe the term was. Instead of winter hats, he wore brightly colored wigs. Less likely to be stolen by compatriots, I guess. Anybody who has worn one for more than a couple of minutes knows how good they are at holding heat so I guess it was utilitarian in addition to being “fun”.

He used to eat at the little college diner that used to be there, back in the beforetime. He tipped. Not a lot, of course… but one of the guys behind the counter yelled at him and said “you already tipped us today! Take the dollar back. You’re good.”

After the homeless guy moved back to his little corner, I asked “wait, he tips?” and the kid behind the counter shook his head ruefully and said “yeah…”

The homeless guy had a bit of a running tab with the restaurant. A gift certificate. I put fifty bucks on it a couple of times.

In late 2018, maybe early 2019, I went in for a sandwich and one of the kids behind the counter told me that his body had been found the day before.

    Memento Mori.Report
