When I was a kid, grandparents died semi-regularly. Not my own, of course, but in the classroom. One here, one there. Maybe 64 years old. Maybe 57. “He was so young!”, the grownups would say, incomprehensibly, in front of the 8 year olds. Stories at the funeral of what they did during the war. Where they fought, how many letters they wrote, why we believe in Heaven. What a wonderful reunion we have coming.

Stories about their parents. One died during the flu. One got run over by a coal cart. One got shot. The guy got caught. The guy never got caught.

Then, after adolescence, the stupid decade where the occasional schoolmate would end up dead. Alcohol. Deacceleration trauma. Other.

The funerals tapered off for a while, there.

Now the parents of friends have started dying.

    This sucks, man.Report
