“Ball and Chain” dates back to 1908, I see. The Internet says that Green’s dictionary of slang takes it back to the 1920s but referring to the wife. A guy in comments says that the OED (since account-locked, I guess) has references to the “ball and chain of matrimony” back in 1855 which is closer to what we see above.
