    But was the sunburn worth it? One of the worse sunburns I ever got, I got because I had a chance to spend the afternoon sailing a little catamaran with my friend’s drop-dead gorgeous sister and her skimpy swimming suit.Report

    A swimsuit would not have prevented that sunburn, I thought, having grown up in the 70’s.

      I always thought those old-timey full-body bathing suits were for modesty’s sake, but maybe they were used to prevent sunburn before effective sunscreen was available?Report

      • That doesn’t explain the portion of my life when skimpy swim attire was a thing and there was no sunscreen, only suntan lotions that didn’t block UV at all. Or the only sunscreen available was opaque zinc oxide creams, famously used on lifeguards’ noses.Report
