A chesterfield?
A couch? That doesn’t make sense. (In googling, I found the term “chesterfield rugby” to refer to “making out on the couch”, which is funny and I totally would have used that term back in my teen years.)
A smoke? I know that Chesterfield was Reagan’s brand (or he advertised for it, anyway).
It seems to be used the same way that “gentleman” would be used. But I can’t find any examples of it being used like that.Report
I think the cigarette is probably right.
Or, he handed his secratery a couch…Report
A web search turns up some old texts describing a man making a “chesterfield bow.” I don’t know the exact definition, but based on the picture it appears to be a bow to thirty degrees or so with hand to sternum.
If you search for “a chesterfield bow” with the quotes, you should find numerous examples, but I haven’t seen it defined.Report
That’s what it is.Report
