    The Browns were St. Louis’ premiere baseball team until sometime around the 20s I believe. The Browns’ owner fired Branch Rickey as the club’s manager, and then agreed to lease Sportsman’s Park to the Cardinals. The Cardinals hired Rickey, who was able to start the modern farm system with the money from selling their ballpark. Rickey went to the Dodgers following the 42 season, but the players mentioned here are all presumably products of that farm system.Report

      The Cardinals had been one of the best teams in the American Association, but were spectacularly bad after joining the National League on its demise in 1892. And. as you say, they didn’t improve until hiring Rickey in the 20s. The Browns were the more successful team until then purely by default.Report
