Man, I *LOVED* the SNES Mario game. If I have a complaint, it’s that there were a handful of sections that required dexterity. (The minecart section, I think?) This wasn’t a problem back in the 90’s, but I have heard that emulators make these sections tough for those who play with keyboard/mouse.

The 3DS Mario/Luigi games are absolutely delightful. Perfect little metroidvania RPGs that, right away, show you chests in a walled garden that you have no access into… until after you get the upgraded version of the item you haven’t found yet.

I got Dream Team and Sticker Star at more-or-less the same time and compare them to each other rather than to, say, Inside Story. As such, I am exceptionally favorably inclined to Dream Team and see Sticker Star as a reskinned 3rd Party Skinner Box.

I do find myself looking at little perfect games like Paper Mario and wondering “seriously, how difficult would it be to get together a team and just make another one of these?” because I look at stuff like Sticker Star and see a lot more of the stapled on mechanics than the straightforward fun.

It much be pretty dang difficult, I guess. We just see the benefits of the mastery and how they made it look easy instead of all of the effort that went into getting to the point where they could make it look easy.Report

Metroidvania is a really interesting way to look at them but it’s absolutely the case. Mario & Luigi really had a cool and unique spin on the genre (unique from Paper Mario, at that) and I really hope this isn’t the end for it.

For Paper Mario, the 3DS game is a tragedy. Originally they wanted to go back to basics (partners, battle system, the whole nine yards) but Miyamoto wasn’t impressed – he said it was too similar to TTYD, basically a port. Additionally, they were told to just ditch having a story. The result was Sticker Star, which is just a colossal disappointment on every level.Report

Why would you do that to yourself? You can get a controller for like….$25, I guess? I bought mine like five years ago.Report

The Paper Marios were brilliant gameplay for those of us not born with a controller in our hands. Super Mario Sunshine took controller skills I don’t have and don’t have time to acquire.

I hope they do bring them back, I really enjoyed those games.Report
