Huawei to Build Part of Britain’s 5G Network
Chinese technology giant Huawei will be involved in the United Kingdom’s 5G infrastructure after a decision by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Huawei will be allowed to build parts of Britain’s 5G network, Boris Johnson has ruled.
The Chinese company will be given access to “non-core” parts of the network but will be banned from “sensitive locations” such as military or nuclear sites.
The decision comes amid warnings from the United States and Tory MPs that giving Huawei access to 5G could jeopardise transatlantic intelligence sharing.
On Tuesday the National Security Council, which comprises the Prime Minister, senior Cabinet ministers and representatives of the security services, decided to proceed with the Huawei deal even though it is a “high risk vendor” because its risks can be “safely managed”.
It’s nice to know that the Chinese state won’t be able to spy on the UK state, but this opens up a lot of potential corporate espionage.

Boris decided to go with Huawei because, I expect, the bid was quite a bit lower than other vendors. He didn’t wonder at all why that was, did he? I mean, “the risks can be managed” is a statement of “we’re much smarter than those guys and the whole reason they underbid was Chinese government subsidy because of spying, but never mind. We’re sure this deal is stable and will work”
