TFA definitely proved to me that I simply don’t have the Warsie bug. I like Star Wars, but I’m just not into it like a warsie should be. I spent the entirety of TFA sort of eyebrow raising and thinking “This is so brutally boring and repetitive.”
Also the idea that blowing up a single planet would wipe out not only an entire galactic government structure but also its entire military was just so knee slapping idiotic that I couldn’t really wrap my brain around it.
I recognize and respect that I am far from the consensus on this but hoo boy I was really unmoved by TFA.
It was, admittedly, better than the prequels.Report

Since we have no hit the sequels, I love this bit from Kennedy.

“Every one of these movies is a particularly hard nut to crack. There’s no source material. We don’t have comic books. We don’t have 800-page novels. We don’t have anything other than passionate storytellers who get together and talk about what the next iteration might be.”

When people whinge about the makers of the new Star Wars movies not loving the source material, quotes like this give support to that concern. Even if Disney decided to restart canon, they can’t just ignore all that came before in the form of books and comics. Or at least, they can’t claim nothing exists.Report

She meant that in the sense that they aren’t doing straightforward adaptations. They aren’t adapting Heir to the Empire or the Vong or the One Sith, they created this story on their own without relying on source material.

If you actually look at the canon as a whole, however, it’s clear the creative team does know the old stuff. They took inspiration from some ideas (like the idea of a Solo turning evil) and brought over some characters (Thrawn), but for the films they just aren’t going to adapt or do what the EU did. Because where’s the fun in that?Report
