When I was a lad, there was a concrete pad outside my Grandparents Cain house with a pump mounted on it. From time to time, out of boredom, I would pump the handle. Nothing ever happened. Then one day, when it had rained the night before and the old leather seals had swollen enough, it worked! I asked my grandparents if it was safe to drink the water, and was told emphatically “No!” The next time we visited the pump was gone and the hole sealed.
