    But why was he quitting smoking? Was it generally suspected even in the 20s that it was bad for your health?Report

    • That was one of the things I learned from the Briggs comics. Not only was it suspected, but it was suspected to the point that the suspicion was assumed and understood in the comics. And it wasn’t because Briggs was an anti-tobacco crusader. He was a cigar smoker who did cigar endorsements.Report

        My grandmother once told me that they called cigarettes “coffin nails” long before the health risks were supported by studies, and it’s pretty common for people in books and the like to complain that their doctors forbade smoking for health reasons. There’s a bit in The Big Sleep, for instance.Report
