    No, dear lady, you haven’t done anything that he should speak that way to you.

    That last panel. I know it’s a running gag from an over a century old artist but it still makes my hackles bristle. I then re-review it and look at the daughter and feel a certain tingle of history tickling the back of my neck. That lady is going to grow up to be a suffragette, yes? We’re virtually peering back through time and looking at the ripples of the first wave of feminism.Report

      This was a frequent story-telling device that Briggs used. A way to convey that a character was a jerk without showing the jerkiness. There’s definitely a gender component. It’s usually (though not always) a man who flew off the handle, and usually (though not always) an employee/underling, woman, or child as the target, with the first often a secretary or other woman.

      But anyway, yeah, it’s definitely there.Report
