Em Carpenter

Em was one of those argumentative children who was sarcastically encouraged to become a lawyer, so she did. She is a proud life-long West Virginian, and, paradoxically, a liberal. In addition to writing about society, politics and culture, she enjoys cooking, podcasts, reading, and pretending to be a runner. She will correct your grammar. You can find her on Twitter.

    L1 – ‘unlikely’- one of the things early 20th century American Communists were really good on was the issue of race – substantially better than the two main political parties, as well as most of the early century progressive/populist offshoots.

    Which made it really easy to Red Bait the civil rights movement in the 2nd half of the 20th century, because there was in fact some there there.

    Eta or maybe should be “were the issues of race”Report

    [L11]: 21 Savage, a rapper who purports to have grown up on the tough streets of Atlanta, was arrested this week- by ICE agents. Turns out, he’s from the UK. He came to the states as a teen and overstayed his VISA.

    21 Savage was born in the UK and his mother brought him to the United States at the age of seven. He again entered the U.S. at the age of twelve on a dependent visa and overstayed it. Looks like you’ve taken at face value the ICE statement about his arrest, which implied that “his whole public persona is false.” That’s not even close to being true.

    Also, 21 Savage has put out two mixtapes, two EPs and two albums since 2015, but goes on the Tonight Show and freestyles a few bars about immigration and family separation and then gets picked up by ICE five days later. The hook here isn’t “rapper fakes background,” it’s “federal government targets artist for making a political statement.”Report

      @jr Yes.

      Also with a sidebar, probably, of federal government uses arrest of artist to further terrorize populace and communicate “no one is protected from us”.Report

      I just summarized the linked article, which I did not write. I didn’t make any assumptions or have any “hook”.Report

        I don’t see a linked article. And honestly, it’s not about you. I’m looking at what’s posted on this page and saying that it’s only a small part of this story and, more importantly, I am suggesting that it is the least interesting part of the story.

        If you’re going to tag this under Black History Month, maybe a little more background is warranted. Just a suggestion.Report

        @em I think there’s a link missing, maybe?Report

              No need. My beef isn’t with you. It’s with the news reporting that took ICE’s statement and essentially reported it uncritically.

              Here’s a guy who is, for all intents and purposes, an American. He did grow up in and around Atlanta. He has kids here and a family and a community. And now he’s being held without bond in a detention facility even though, according to his lawyers, he had an ongoing visa application filed with USCIS.Report
