The origin of the “I can’t put my arms down!!!!” gag from “A Christmas Story”?Report
I remember a few mornings in grade school where all of us kids struggled through undressing after walking to school — both pair of mittens, the coat, the scarf, the hat, one of the two shirts, one of the two pair of jeans, the boots… The back of the classroom looked like a used clothing store. Occasionally my fingers were so cold I couldn’t put my thumb and finger tips together. I had to try to squeeze the zipper tabs between the ball of my thumb and the first joint on my index finger, which didn’t work well at all.
In hindsight, it seems almost impossible that I got through my childhood without ever having a case of frostbite. Came close to hypothermia a couple of times, though, when I managed to get some of my clothing soaking wet at those temperatures.Report
We had a company meeting this past week. When planning it, I made the point over and over that we did not want to be in New York City in late January. Did people listen? Hint: I now know how to use the AirTrain and the E to get between JFK and Chelsea.Report
When I worked for a NY company, I remember a summer management meeting, set in Phoenix. I don’t think anyone over there really understood what 115* really was until then.Report
I don’t expect I’ll ever experience minus 40 again. Last time was in the mid or late 90s. My parents had just gotten me a Canadian military arctic patrol parka for Christmas. I was comfortable as could be – that coat is amazing. I haven’t had a call to put it on since that winter though.
This current horrendous cold snap we’re experiencing, is a brief return to rather cold but unremarkable winter temperatures from 20 years ago.Report
Trick question. It doesn’t matter, because -40°C = -40°F.Report
And since there’s no such thing as -40 Kelvin, -40 is an unambiguous temperature description.Report
