  1. The amazing thing about the transgender military ban is that no one was really pushing for it. It wasn’t really on anyone’s radar. It’s a bone Trump threw to the Religious Right. But it reveals how little he understands them. He just assumes the real lunatic fringe represents most of them and does whatever they want.Report

It’s also possible that it was a pet issue of someone on Trump’s staff. As far as I can tell, policy is running very top to down/inside to out in this administration. This creates a lot of opportunity for policy entrepreneurs to push things that don’t have any real constituency.Report

This is whence the impetus for the transgender ban comes from.

WASHINGTON — President Trump met last week with a delegation of hard-right activists led by Ginni Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, listening quietly as members of the group denounced transgender people and women serving in the military, according to three people with direct knowledge of the events.

To be clear, it’s not this specific meeting, but rather this mindset, which is held by a non-trivial number among the larger conservative movement – that even rejects the gender integration in the military that’s already happened anywhere from 5 to 15 to 30 years ago. (or 40 in some cases)
