Yeah, the mix tape as time capsule and documentary.

I made mix tapes for a handful of girlfriends and I listen to some songs not as the songs themselves but as a snapshot of a particular emotional moment.

Paul McCartney’s “No More Lonely Nights” is one of those songs that I listened to without hearing it because it was a mini time machine to go back to 1989. (Did you know that that’s David Gilmour on guitar? It is! I didn’t know that until only a few years ago. A song I listened to a million times and never heard because when I played it, it gave me flashbacks. It took me decades to listen to the song and actually listen to it rather than remember hitting doubles down in The Lynchpin Event‘s basement. And now I hear the guitar and think “yep… that’s Gilmour.”)

Other songs that I hesitate to even mention because if I say “hey, listen to this song”, it feels like I’m baring some secret. Other people might only hear a rock song that was popular for 20 minutes back in the 90’s but, for me, it feels like I’m talking about Ohio University and sitting and talking for hours about nothing.

I realize, now, that it’s just a song by Hüsker Dü for 99% of folks out there. The 1% of folks out there who also feel a gut punch when they hear it probably feel vaguely subtweeted that I even brought it up. “Did he deliberately pick Hüsker Dü because of me?” (No. I deliberately picked it because of me. But I hear you.)

Somewhere in a box down in the basement I have a mix tape that is 75% completed (stuff happened).

It occurs to me that I might want to listen to it. Then I think for a few moments and think “Nah… I never need to hear those particular songs in that particular order ever again.” Heck, I don’t even know what songs are on the tape anymore… I don’t even know what they would be… well, Jeff Buckley is probably on there… Maybe Jann Arden… wait, stop. Best not to dwell on it too long.Report

I was deliberately waiting to listen to these until I could curl up somewhere and listen to them all in order without interruptions.

    I’m very glad I did.

    Thank you for this excavation.Report
