I think I’m that kind of introvert. I like people, I can often happily talk with people for a long time….but then I hit a wall and suddenly it’s Too Many People and I really want to go home. Then again, I can tell if I’m alone too much I get broody and weird and that’s what’s happening this summer (not teaching, most of my colleagues that I talk to on a day to day basis during the regular year are off traveling or doing fieldwork or just not coming in to the office….and I’ve had a few bad days).

One big plan for this weekend: I have to go up on my roof and scrape off the pecan catkins that are up there. This is before our bad drought hits, and before Independence Day, because historically, people on my block go crazy with fireworks and I worry a little bit about a misaimed one landing in the dry vegetation on my roof….the big issue being I have no one I feel comfortable calling to come out at 7 am (the only time when it’s not death-hot out there) to spot me on the ladder so I bet I wind up doing it alone and just hoping I don’t fall.

But that’s for tomorrow, I think, because today is one of the rare days I don’t have pollen-and-mold induced hives and I want to enjoy it.

So I’m going antiquing today, and by happenstance I learned about a yarn shop that JUST opened up in the town 1/2 hour from me (so: half the distance of the other yarn shop I know of). I want to go there to check it out and be able to have gone there at least ONCE. (Specialty type shops don’t have a history of lasting well in my area, unfortunately….)Report

So, Beavers won yesterday, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

But Harlan Ellison died yesterday, which is not so nice.

No real plans, other than going out with the wife for dinner (schools out, the town is empty so we can go to the restaurants that always fill up normally.) I did run into the neighborhood block captain (??) yesterday and she informed me that they are going to close my street for the 4th. So I have that to look forward to.

As far as introverts go, my wife is an only child who grew up way out in the country. So, yeah, she would happily not speak to anyone for days. And like @fillyjonk when she does socialize, she often hits a wall with people.Report

You know, I’m an only child, and I thrive on contact with others. I can handle being by myself but I get lonely after not a very long time and very much want the company of friends.

Continuing to balance my financial strength, desire for social and cultural activities, and need to set up a home office as I shop for a new home in PDX. Looking forward to my next trip there and hoping I can open an escrow while there.Report

I am a younger sibling and as such, I am used to being around people, but it really has to be on my terms at this point. Although I think that a lot of my needs for human contact have diminished to meet my wife’s needs.Report

  3. I like the focus on *stimuli* and not just people when it comes to thinking about introversion/extroversion. I can get super overwhelmed in the absence of people. (I do think it might be an issue of types of stimuli, too. Ben and Jerry’s is a stimulus.)

This weekend: nothing much. Just running errands.Report

    • Yeah, I almost sat down and cried in the Kroger today because it was too much. Too many people, but also too many people coming from so many directions and a lot of them not looking where they were going so I had to be extra careful not to run into people, and too many “runners” using those giant carts to fill the orders for people who order food over the Internet and pick it up for a fee, and too many “aisle blocking” displays and too much noise and it was too hot and too bright.

(Granted: it was the end of the errand day for me and I had also had to deal with some patron at the bookstore ahead of me who kept doing the “oh I need one more thing” from the clerk, and then I had to speak to a kid who came up and tried to cut in front of me in line. And even politely telling a kid, “I’m sorry but I was here first, you can check out after I’m done” feels like more than I want to do. And his mom was kinda looking daggers at me. Maybe I should have just let him go ahead of me)

If I have to process too much at once I get overwhelmed, especially if there’s some kind of *responsibility* on my part involved (e.g., not running into people who blindly step out from the end of an aisle and just keep walking while looking down at their phone)Report

Banished to Nova Scotia for a week. Ung.Report

    • Maribou in reply to North says:

@north Is it freezing cold or melting hot there? My sister in PEI reports both frost warnings and humidex warnings in the span of the same week….Report

      • Michael Cain in reply to Maribou says:

Why not both? Yesterday’s high at my house was 102. Tomorrow’s forecast for my house says 70. Back into the 90s for next week. Best I get out and do all the heavy lifting things tomorrow…Report

      • North in reply to Maribou says:

My mother tells me that Nova Scotia has been both bitterly dry and cold. Frosts wrought havoc on the blueberry and fruit tree blossoms this year.
Global warming melts ice, that melt water goes into the Labrador current and as you well know the Labrador current and the Gulf current wrestle off the Maritimes so a stronger Labrador current means a colder and more arid Maritimes.Report

        • Maribou in reply to North says:

@north Ugh. I can imagine. How unpleasant for the trees (and the people).

PEI being such a small island, at least they almost never get the arid part (even if they don’t love humidex warnings for being too hot & damp).Report

Catching up after camping at the lake for a week. Have about 7ish loads of laundry to do. Still haven’t totally unpacked the suburban (only perishables and clothes unloaded so far). Them catching up on emails. Where we were is like the Bermuda triangle for cell phone coverage. None of the big 4 carriers have ANY coverage in the area…which was great last week but the backlog for tomorrow…I want to go back to the lake. Also will be installing lighting into my new work studio.Report

I am going to Cape May by myself. I might take a whale watch cruise. I might not. I’ll be alone, contemplate my place in the world, and my lack of importance to other people in hopes of breaking myself of the “center of the universe” thinking but without the thoughts completely undermining attempts at feeling happiness. Afterwards, I might visit Wildwood since it’ll probably be the only time I will be in Wildwood this summer.Report

The Mrs. and I are both introverts, but are compelling ourselves to meet some friends at the Edison, a steampunk themed bar here in downtown.

I will be attending a certain rally at City Hall at midday but we can discuss that on a different thread Monday.Report
