Well, I for one tweeted about this remark last night, giving it precisely the amount of respect it deserved.

I was far from the only one.

Yeah, but it would probably be one of those healthy burritos, with whole-wheat tortillas, brown rice, non-dairy cheese, and grilled tofu.Report

      • Murali in reply to Gabriel Conroy says:

Rice in a burrito already makes it unhealthy. And non-dairy cheese is criminal. Go for low fat mature cheddar instead. grilled tofu is good especially if its cooked with lots of spice. Also bulk it up with lots of refried beans and some green vegies just so that you don’t feel like youve eaten a massive protein bar.Report

I’d actually donate to Hillary if she did a big photo op at a taco truck buying tacos for the press and bystanders and just gloriously chowing down them. Would be an epic clowning on despicable clown. Just go full Oprah…”you get taco…you get a taco….everybody gets tacos!!!”Report

This is pretty revealing. When you can’t use, “They’re rapists,” or some other claim about actual harm, you can still just point out that they’re Mexican and that’s bad enough on its own.

Jeez, at least being anti-immigrant when you think they’re bringing a wave of crime and taking your job makes sense.Report

  8. I have a slightly different take on this.

In the late part of the 19th Century, Eastern European Jews started to immigrate to the US in sizable numbers. The Jews who were already here, largely Spanish and German, were not exactly welcoming, looking on them as superstitious, uneducated peasants who didn’t speak the language of the countries they were coming from, much less the one they were going to. And they worried that “Jew” would cease to connote professional or businessman, and would instead evoke the image of a semiliterate peddler or pieceworker. I can easily imagine one of them warning that if they kept immigrating, New York City would become choked with pushcarts.

Given that this in’t from Trump himself, but from a highly-placed Latino supporter, I suspect it’s the same sort of snobbery: “My family has been here a long time, and we’re doctors and lawyers and business owners. Now, because of mass immigration, people think of us as gardeners, busboys, and people who ask “Do you want hot sauce on that?'”Report

    • Good point, actually. Basically scrambling to pull up the ladder they’ve already climbed.

Hostility to more available Mexican food goes back further than commonly realized, btw. Tamale vendors in particular were being banned a century ago, and at one point it was even seen as harbinger of anarchism.

To me, open borders is a matter of basic human liberty & the idea of the state having to “vet” migrants on the assumption that people from elsewhere are bad unless proven otherwise (by the standards of a government operating as national human resources board) is inherently prejudiced garbage that should be abolished yesterday. The spread of diverse cuisines in the US (btw: kebab trucks would be nice too) after such move towards freedom is just the whipped cream on the sundae.Report
