Is the article on cutting corners the one you wanted to link to? The article seems to me about how Japanese construction is somewhat *better* now in quality and durabilty than historical averages, and they’re razing down mostly good enough buildings, because that’s the way they’ve always done things.

The article on Modi is interesting, but it written by a person that’s always been a fan of Modi and had mostly the same political preferences. (And the authors bio is basically – I’m one of the few bastions remaining in a world dominated by the Liberal Media)Report

The New Yorker article doesn’t make Ike look all that good – or it takes out of context his statements. A guy that was against nuclear weapons in 1948, then against them in 1961, but then presides over the largest buildup of them in human history – is not a good look.

Otoh, the author sorta turns inside out Curtis LeMay’s strategic vision and yada yadas the revolt of the admirals in the dynamic between post war defense budgets and nuclear weapons procurement & policy, so Ike might be misinterpreted here as well.Report

It’s Game Theory. Eisenhower was well aware of what nuclear weapons meant, but also understood the logic that required them to be held by any nation that wanted to maintain its autonomy.

Like, “do what I say or I’ll nuke you”. What’s the response to that, in a world where you can’t stop them nuking you?Report

Insty made a good point today.

Want to increase economic mobility? Stop tying it to expensive educational degrees and substitute cheap competency testing. And instead of telling employers not to ask people about criminal records, bar them from asking where people went to school. That would be a revolution.

A libertarian wants a law banning employers from asking questions of prospective employees about educational success?

      Go figure.

“torn down anyway” Oh hey, look at this, turns out the solution (as usual) is Less Property Ownership.

“The solution, argues Townsend, is for the government to stop promoting the dream of home ownership for everyone.”

Because the best situation is for two or three giant corporations to own all the residential property in the country, and everyone else just rents an apartment.Report

Combat vehicle hull art is a tradition I hope never goes away. I know it violates all kinds of edicts to maintain uniformity of appearance, yadda yadda, but in a way, it’s a touch of humanity in a very inhumane business.Report

    Well, Twitter is lovely tonight.

Conservatives are retweeting media figures commenting on the San Jose conflict and snarking that media figures are ignoring the San Jose conflict.

Lefties are indignant that some liberals (and centrists and conservatives) are unhappy about protesters assaulting Trump supporters.Report
