they may have just made the numbers up.

This strikes me as very, very avoidably dumb. I mean, sure, *I* live in a neighborhood where I don’t know how the person 3 houses down voted. I tell you what, though, there are a lot of people out there who live in neighborhoods where they do know such things.

Hell, I grew up in one. (My next-door neighbor taught at the same school (IN THE SAME DEPARTMENT!) as my dad.) As such, sending out something like this really ought to rely on good numbers. I mean, if you give one of these forms to someone who votes every caucus, rain or shine, and they see a “C” next to their name? They’re going to hate you when they find out that is was you who was behind the stunt and they’re a lot more reliable caucus goers than the person who sees a “C” next to her name who has never, eeeeever, gone to a caucus.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.Report

  2. I’m also reluctant to make assumptions about how Iowans see these mailers. They seem to have differential norms about voting.

Apparently Tom Hinkeldey reads all the crap email that he’s sent. Maybe he should ignore it once he established that it’s junk mail (and/or campaign lit)Report

Of all the odious things Cruz has done, this one strikes me as being pretty typical political behavior. What isn’t typical is his doubling down on it like the college debate champ level asshole he is. I hope Trump blows him out of the water in Iowa.Report

    I just find this baffling.

Junk mail annoys me. Junk mail made up to look like official government mail annoys me even more. (And I think it should be illegal.)

I understand that some people might be okay with receiving political solicitations in the mail, I guess? (Although campaigns might want to check the percentages on that vs. people it pisses off.)

I suspect that fewer people are okay with receiving scam-government political solicitations, especially one that implied I was in legal trouble after I opened it, *and* promised they had told my neighbors the same thing.Report

I think the theory went something like this on the part of the Cruz folks:

We will benefit the most from high, but not too high, turnout.

We need another X (BUT NOT X + Y) to show up.

What’s the best way to increase turnout by about that much?

A dirty trick like this one will bump another Xish people. But not Xish plus Y.

And if people are pissed off, eff them. They won’t find out about it until after the caucus. They’ll cool off by November.

      If I had to guess.Report
