Freddie:
This is crucial because, as almost anyone will tell you, only America ultimately can broker peace in Palestine. This is because the deep economic, military and diplomatic investment of the United States in Israel gives us the power to deeply influence Israeli policy moving forward.
I think this is absolutely correct.
This is a test comment, by the way, or else I’d go into a bit more depth–though in all honesty, the purpose of this project is to go in to depth in the follow-up posts. So perhaps I wouldn’t.
Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3….
Above is the very first ever comment on this site, made by Erik Kain in January of 2009 in response to a post by Freddie deBoer.
Freddie’s post was essentially an attempt to solve all the problems in the Middle East; the subsequent conversation it kicked off, sadly but not surprisingly, missed that particular mark by a wee, tiny bit. Nearly as remarkable a feat, however, is that the conversation kicked off by that comment above continues today, more than six years later.
Today, as I’m sure all of you know by now thanks to CK, Ordinary Times/The League of Ordinary Gentlemen logged its 500,000th comment.[1]
Half a million.
Wow.
Stop and think for a moment just how many 500,000 really is: If we were to go outside right now and stack 500,000 cars on top of one another, I’m pretty sure that the city of Portland would fine me at least three grand and so we’re absolutely not going to be doing that. Still, you get my point.[2]
We’ve hit a lot of milestones over the past three years but this one is special, and literally all of the thanks — all of them — go to you folks. Sure, the writers write, the editors heard cats, and Pat and CK do the magical and mysterious tech-y stuff they do — and when you put all of that together, all you have is a website. It’s everyone else here that’s made that site into a community.
Allow me then to take a quick moment to thank all of you who come here. I know I speak for all the editors as well as the writers when I say that none of us would bother with any of this if it wasn’t for y’all. Your collective intelligence, wit, intellectual engagement, and emotional honesty is quite literally what we pay our writers. If you’ve been thinking that you come here because of us, you’ve got it backward. We come here because of you. Thank you for an amazing conversation.
Now, where the hell did I put that 50 year old scotch?
[1] If you’re interested, the first comment by a non-masthead person was made by a commenter who went by the name “raft.” As best I can tell, raft’s time here was quite short. What has become of him of her, I have no idea.
[2] If not, try using this Fun Stats Fact: If you put 500,000 George RR Martins at 500,000 typewriters, for 500,000 years, one of them would eventually type the complete works of Shakespeare!
None would finish Song of Fire & Ice, however.
UPDATE: The 500,000th comment, for those wondering, was this comment by Gabriel Conroy. I will go ahead echo CK’s observation that “fittingly, it’s a comment quoting someone else’s comment, under a comment rescue post.”
It’s really impressive. We’re 1/10 the way to half a million!Report
fixed.
🙂Report
Very appropriate the first comment was between Erik and Freddie.
PS To start the next half million let me quote Dr. Johnny Fever
“I almost forgot, fellow babies: BOOGER!”Report
You have 50 year old scotch?!
I’ll be right over…Report
It’s not that big a deal. His name is Hamish.Report
LMAO!Report
It was this one, btw… have temporarily put a green border on it, but, over the course of the next 500k comments, we can figure out some proper decorations:

Fittingly, it’s a comment quoting someone else’s comment, under a comment rescue post.
I’ll post it in the widget in a bit.Report
“Fittingly, it’s a comment quoting someone else’s comment, under a comment rescue post.”
Fitting indeed!
I’ll add the link and tis comment in an update above; needs to be preserved.Report
I think it’s also fitting that the comment aspires to transcend partisanship in favor of substance.Report
I’m just glad it wasn’t someone posting a “+1”.Report
I was afraid it would be:
“That was misthreaded. Supposed to be a response to Chris.”Report
I have a screen capture on my phone at 500,000, if we want that.Report
Oh yeah, we totally want that.Report
Here it is: https://ordinary-times.com/?attachment_id=85139Report
btw – the Commentariat page is a rough draft or a partial skeleton- exposed to the light for purposes of today’s sorta-festivities – of what we have discussed previously.
Is much more to be added to it over time, but as is it gives you the 50 most recent comments at OT, and a place to observe goings-on. Eventually I think could be embedded within or linked to a blog or blog-like entity…Report
Fine you? Portland would declare it public art and make it a tourist destination. Voodoo Doughnuts all around!Report
space awesomeReport
Space Awesome!!!! I am proud to be part of the OT and very much value everyone hereReport
Priding on writing the comment rescue’d that produced OTC .5M. And grateful it was made by Gabriel, since he was the knight in shining armor who rescued the comment from ignobility. That he did so rescuing another comment, and one that addressed the sentiments of the original comment?
That’s some good mojo.Report
Finally, something that gives May 5 unique historical significance. There are already so many days where one can celebrate defeating the French.Report
Well played all around! (I haven’t posted much out of fear it would be me…)Report
Oh agnostic Jesus! I click one article over from that one and there is Roque Nuevo. Memories! Sweet memories!!!!Report
Congrats to Gabriel. Let us go for one million.Report
none of us would bother with any of this if it wasn’t for y’all
Well, exactly one of us would. 🙂Report
I’m drinking a beer right now.
It is completely unrelated to the 500,000 comment (I usually drink with dinner) but my timing is impeccable 🙂
Cheers to all!!!Report
“If you’ve been thinking that you come here because of us, you’ve got it backward. We come here because of you.”
I agree. Best commentariat on the internet.Report

Among other changes in honor of the 1st Half 10^6, I’d also like to recommend a new default avatar, tho I’m not sure it’ll take care of the current problem with GoG showing the Gravatar image rather than the Mystery Man (whom I never cared for much, but at least isn’t advertising someone’s service however useful some find it…)
Am open, of course, to alternative suggestions…Report
Bowler hats are awesome and all, says the guy who bought one to wear to lLeagueFest.
But one of the reasons that I like the old-fashioned bicycle as the logo so much is that an alternative name for a bicycle like that is an “Ordinary.” So I’d suggest that.Report
For reasons I haven’t looked into, the Favicon I done whipped up doesn’t show consistently across browsers. I could use it, since it includes the bicycle – would have to futz with it a little to make it display right as an avatar:
(By the way, since I mean to say it in a comment, but then decided to write a longer reply, but then got caught up with things, your post on the Obergefell args was a great credit to the site – even if it wasn’t as heavily commented as less substantive posts sometimes may be.)Report
Oh, I noticed the icon change in my RSS reader recently. Before, the RSS feed didn’t have one. I appreciate the change.Report
And I had no idea that those old bikes were called “Ordinaries.”Report
I’ve always seen “penny-farthing”.Report
@ck-macleod
I like the idea of a Mystery Man wearing a bowler hat.Report
@james-k
liking that idea muchly.Report
@james-k , @burt-likko , @bert-the-turtle
Report
I love the bowler hat idea, but at the risk of being called a beta male by Kathy Shaidle I think that it may not be the most inclusive default gravatar for the site. After all, the whole reason the site changed its name from The League of Ordinary Gentlemen to Ordinary Times was to project a more gender neutral atmosphere.Report
Bert The Turtle,
League of Ordinary Gentlepeople or -persons woulda done that trick, and a grrrl in a bowler’s my kinda OG.
The LoOG will rise again.Report
In addition to raft, we’ve had other commenters with great handles, like Infuriating Pedant and The Fifth Dentist. That I remember these folks for so long is indicative of the importance of the commenting community here.
The posts are great, but the comments are the payoff. Keep them cards and letters coming in, folks.Report
Oh my. And I didn’t even know there was a countdown.Report
…too busy wrapped up in a convo… naturallyReport
Congrats! You guys have built quite a place. The internet is better for it.Report
