I can’t wait to know what kind of phone I will have five years from now.

They used to pay me to predict what the available tech would be capable of for questions like this. So, let’s see…

In common usage, as a phone, it will be back down to the 5-inch display size. When you need screen real estate, you’ll pop either (a) pop open a clam shell sort of arrangement or (b) pull out the tab that unrolls the screen to give you something on the order of an 8-inch display. OLED tech on flexible plastic substrate (the biggest fixed display you can fit in a hip/cargo pocket is about 7 inches, and it’s horribly klutzy as a phone). Bit rates will be modestly higher but not enormously so. Memory and processing won’t improve nearly as much as everyone expects, because Moore’s Law is about to run into Rock’s Law — it’s unclear that any company will be able to afford 10-nm fabs for parts in consumer devices.Report

  2. My videos look like that too, not just across apps but across devices. Whom should I report this to?Report

It *is* nice that we’re getting to the point, with these devices, where operation is so straightforward that we don’t need a failure tree fishbone analysis process to determine whether it’s a hardware fault or user error. You push the button and it goes; and if it doesn’t go, it’s because it’s broken and not because you pushed the wrong button at the wrong time in the wrong way.Report
