So I was reading He can’t sleep, so he has to kill the gods in her belly. It seems likely that there is a threat to his rule as well. and then thinking about how, say what you will about Judaism, it didn’t have a deity that killed his son!

And then I knitted my brow.Report

Well, technically the deity who won out just killed his grandmother, so there’s that. The Old Testament is probably more accurate in how these things played out with warring tribes conquering each other in battle, as opposed to gods slaughtering each other, although perhaps not and the Babylonians had it right.Report

It’s very reminiscent of the fighting among Uranus, Chronos, and the eventual winner, Zeus. In fact, the notion the beginning of time was a war between gods is awfully widespread; all the polytheistic religions I’ve read about (Greek, Egyptian, Hindu) include it, and Christianity has the revolt of Lucifer and the War in Heaven. The only ones I know of that don’t are the strictly monotheistic Judaism and Islam.Report

Yeah, that’s what came to mind for me too. I probably should have done more with Theogony, although I’ll get to that before long I’m sure.Report
