Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

I am wondering whether to get back into gaming or not.

This is how my gaming usually goes, I decide it has been a while since I played a game and I play for a bit and get into it. Somewhere around the halfway point, I get bored or busy with something else and then stop. By the time I remember to play again, I’ve forgotten where I was in the game or just lost interest.

Gaming is a huge time demand and I am a very casual RPGer. FFVII is the platonic ideal of a game for me. There are sidequests but not too many, a decent story, and the game is long but not overly so. Now it seems like games are just aimed at having as many expansion packs as humanly possible and a trillion side quests. I had a friend in college who would just randomly start games over again if he felt like he would complete the game but miss one weapon or one side quest.Report

Just out of curiosity, did the designer of that toy up top have green hair, and favor purple suits?

Does the toy do anything…unusual, after a time?Report

There was one creepier doll commercial that I found but it was a bridge to far, even for me.Report

      • Glyph in reply to Jaybird says:

The first part of the commercial is realistic, with the kids whipping their heads around in total “WTF WAS THAT?!” fear.

The second part, when they begin to be infected by its laughter, only makes sense if the doll is emitting some sort of odorless, colorless nerve agent that cannot be seen on-camera.Report

Having a Wii that only gets used a couple times a month, I told myself that I wouldn’t buy a Wii U just for Mario Kart 8. This week, I bought a Wii U and Mario Kart 8. I was home all week with my daughter, weather and a leg infection limited the outdoor activities.

MK8 is an improvement from its predecessor. The change in graphics is like going from SD to HD all over again. And even the gameplay seems more fun.

We also tried the free trial of Wii Sports Club. There are some small changes and incorporation of the Wii U gamepad into some of the games, but mostly feels like the regular Wii Sports but with better graphics.Report

I keep playing WoW despite being one of only two active players in a guild that had over 100 active two expansions ago. Maybe they’ll all come back in September with the next expansion. Right.
I supported the kickstarter for the Jagged Alliance reboot but not the Wasteland reboot. Probably backed the wrong horse but they needed the money more and I’ll eventually play both of them anyway.
I keep thinking about buying Don’t Starve, but I’m afraid it would be a timesink too far. And if I wanted to destroy furniture in frustration at being a pawn buffeted by the winds of a random, uncaring universe – I’d go back to subjecting myself to random refereeing decisions and “supergoalie” in Championship Manager.
I am very conflicted about the idea of Shelter. From the description, it’s as much performance art/method acting as it is a “game”. And I think I’m too much of a softy for the subject matter – I cry when everybody dies at the end of “Glory”(*), how am I going to stand up to losing my little badger children?(**)

(*) Was that a spoiler? Sorry
(**) Yes, I know that’s the point of the game. I’m just not sure if I could handle it.Report

      I was exceptionally frustrated by Don’t Starve. I can’t play it anymore.Report

That one tempts me every time it shows up in a Steam sale. What did you find so frustricating about it?Report

      • Jaybird in reply to Jaybird says:

I’ve heard it called a 2-d Minecraft and there is some seriously interesting stuff you can build, but the goal of the game is to not die.

        And you will. Eventually.

        It’s too existential for me.Report

      • North in reply to Jaybird says:

Don’t starve actually has a goal beyond don’t die but if you aren’t progressing towards that goal then odds are you will die. While you can develop your base and characters gear upwards the world’s ascending difficulty generally represents a steeper slope than your characters growing capabilities. It was conceived of and developed as a hard hard unforgiving game and it sticks to that theme tightly. That said it can be fun but once you get set back to square 1 a few times the initial gathering monotony is too brutal for the interest of the initial exploration to make up for.Report

I’m started winning at Eve: Online again (you win it the same way you win Global Thermonuclear War).

Tried Tomb Raider on the Mac and it was too bloody for my tastes. Still playing Don’t Starve off and on, which suits me well. Finished Portal again and will probably pick up Portal 2 soon. May start playing a little Go on the KGS Go Server, too. Amazing how much time not playing Eve opens up for things like family, this blog, cycling, other games, etc.Report

XCOM: Enemy Within with the Long War mod. The mod makes the game much more like the original, as in the missions are harder, your soldiers die far more often, failing missions is inevitable and far more frequent, and it takes time to build everything. No more spending the money and flipping the switch on the replicator for laser rifles; you’ll be waiting ten days to field those babies, thank you very much. The mod also does some pretty diabolical things like spawning pods of aliens behind you a few turns into the mission, cutting off your escape route to the Skyranger. The mod is amazing and makes the game (good as it was) more like what we were expecting with the remake. It’s sooooo daaaaamn frustrating; it’s sooooo daaaaamn good.Report

I remain enslaved to Civilization V Brave New World multiplayer. They have also announced Civilization: Beyond Earth which is proof positive that Sid either loves me or hates me and wants me to spend every breath I have in his world.Report

    • Kim in reply to North says:

Sid’s rather agnostic, actually, I’m sure.
He does love his pirates, though…

Brian Reynolds, on the other hand, would probably want you to spend all your time in his world.Report
