I thought I was tough…

Glyph

Glyph is worse than some and better than others. He believes that life is just one damned thing after another, that only pop music can save us now, and that mercy is the mark of a great man (but he's just all right). Nothing he writes here should be taken as an indication that he knows anything about anything.

Shortly after Lain was born, we were called at five in the morning after some tests that we needed to drive four hours or so to immediately see a “pediatric cardiologist” (a job that I didn’t know existed, but whose title says it all). The immediately was stressed. It was… traumatizing. For us, anyway. She was a happy little darling the whole time, which made it even more difficult. Everything went fine and the test came back positive.

It was a little after that we found out about the hip dysplasia and that she would be required to wear a brace on her legs for the first six months of her life. We kept telling ourselves that this was a better problem to have than the heart thing. Seeing her in that brace, though, for the first time, was just heart-breaking. Something was officially wrong with our little girl. No matter how trivial, ultimately, we knew that little wrong thing to be.

I don’t know the story behind the picture, and I certainly can’t claim to have been there. But my imagination has a better grasp of it that it once did. Good luck, and God bless.Report

Glyph, I have something in my eye. I was there twenty two years ago (all was well soon thereafter, and I don’t think about it very often any more); I don’t mean this as advice, exactly, but, from my experience then, now is a good time to be gentle on all concerned, including yourself.Report

  16. Hi Glyph, I realize I’m quite late to this, but you and your fam will be in my thoughts and prayers. I’m glad to hear the little one is home, now.

We have some good friends who just had their fifth baby last week. He was rather early and is now in the NICU. Mid-July is when they’re thinking they’ll be able to release him. Watching this happen to friends is heartbreaking enough, I can’t imagine what it’s like to live it.Report
