I am not wise, when it comes to Nashville bands, but my favorite Paramore-related video is this cover (that trombone!):

I’d vote for Ben Folds as the biggest guy in Nashville, but I’m probably wrong.

Fun fact: I was introduced to Folds by the National Review. (No politics)Report

Ben Folds is probably the biggest musician there, but I don’t really think of him as rock.

He actually lives in Franklin (my hometown), and is a regular at one of my favorite places on the planet, Merridee’s, home of the world’s best sausage gravy and biscuits. Hell, it’s not even close. I mean, I haven’t tried all of the sausage gravy and biscuits in the world, but I don’t have to, because it’s that good.Report

    That’s all I got.

It IS weird that there aren’t more, ‘cos like you say you can walk into any dive bar any night of the week and see world-class musicians moonlighting from their day jobs.Report

Night Beds are great, and Lambchop was there back when I had a friend who worked at a radio station (Thunder 94) and got me into virtually every show for free. I miss those days. I remember seeing them at the Exit/In.

And you know, Austin has some really good musicians, but when I first moved here I was really excited to see a show because it was the “Live Music Capital of the World,” but quickly realized that Nashville musicians had spoiled me, because the folks here weren’t in their league.

Here I was focusing on the bands that “made” the scene, but there’s also Jeff the Brotherhood:

      Heavy Cream:

      Diarrhea Planet:

The Exit/In is awesome. Nashvillle is on a short-list of “could maybe live there” cities.

I refuse to listen to a band that calls themselves “Diarrhea Planet”. They should go on a tour with Pissed Jeans and Shat Shorts (tour sponsored by Depends).Report

The live music scene of my home town was phenomenal for a while there. I sort of stumbled on it when I downloaded some no-name’s song off the old IUMA website and then was at a music club and saw that the guy was going to be making an appearance there. My friends and I went and had a blast. Said no-namer ended up relocating (to Nashville, as it turned out) and in my search to find some other guy’s show to go to I found twenty other guys’ shows to go to. For a while I was going to anywhere from one to three or four shows a week. It was one of the hardest things about leaving that city.

After I did, though, things died down. Some of the local names went on to become national names if you follow country music. It’s cool to be able to look at CMT and see familiar faces. Others started moving on to day jobs and the like or went back to school.Report
