Now THIS is some sad bastard music; and I would know.

I had a roommate who played the heck out of these guys, and I just couldn’t get into them. But they are working better for me tonight.

Must be the cold medicine and exhaustion; my defenses are down. (They are reminding me of Ida somewhat).

While we are on the subject of Pitchfork, rarely have I read a review that left me with less idea of what the hell the record sounds like, than this one from today:

    http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18915-ceo-wonderland/

I still visit the site, because it keeps me up to date on what’s out; but they have never kept on any writer that I liked for very long.Report

That ceo review feels like it was written before he knew what he was going to be reviewing.

And I hear the guitar similarity in Ida, but Ida is definitely less “this album comes with Zoloft.”

Oh, and I had a roommate who listened to RHP incessantly as well. It did come in handy during a breakup though. And I was the king of breakups in college.Report

Also, I like how in “Long Distance Run Around,” when they get to the jump in tempo, you can almost hear the drummer thinking, “Finally, I get to bang these things!”Report

The whole “let’s take the song from that era with that era’s aesthetic and give it a coat of paint with this era’s aesthetic” is something that I really, really find interesting.

Straight covers work mostly for live music, I guess (you’re going to a bar/grill and the guy in the corner has four chords and they’re the same four chords that Tom Petty had) but when folks reinterpret standards and make them their own? That can be awesome.

I wonder why there isn’t more of that going on… immediate suspicion is that the money screws everything up but maybe the folks most inclined to make music/produce it are interested in doing their own vision rather than imposing their vision on someone else’s.Report

Last night I did a quick search to see if RHP had ever covered Joy Division, because practically every other band in the slowcore scene did (G500, Bedhead, Codeine, Low) and they pretty much range from good to great (G500’s “Ceremony” almost gives the original a run for its money).Report

Very late to this, but I am a big fan of Sun Kil Moon (talk about an awesome name for a band) via Ghosts of the Great Highway. The new record sounds like something amazing, like the musical equivalent of a Roberto Bolaño novel.
