According to a faithful reader, I'm Ordinary Times's "least thoughtful writer." So I've got that going for me, which is nice.

I’ll definitely have to try some DJ Shadow the next time my kids and I play YouTube. So far, they’ve liked the Avett Brothers and Daft Punk but not the Black Keys or Lil Jon.Report

For a long time Entroducing was my go-to example for people who doubted the possibility of creating something wholly original from samples. I’ve spent a lot of time with that record and I’m not sure I’ll ever tire of it, the way it layers and shifts moods.

And “You Can’t Go Home Again” rocks.Report

I caught “Changeling” on a tape recording of a college radio show and was utterly enthralled. It took years before I found out what it was. It inspired my own all-sample L’Heure Du Poisson created in Sony Acid software.Report

Nice writing. That was the first all-sample record I heard. I later went nuts for a couple by People Like Us that are less beat-driven and more surreal…”Music for the Fire” and “Welcome Abroad.” She (the artist) gives them away for free at her label’s website (http://illegal-art.net/peoplelikeus/shop/index.html). The Avalanches’ “Since I Left You” is my other favorite masterwork of appropriated sound.Report
