Wow – what a finish to last night’s episode. I had emotionally accepted Merle being killed during the commercial break but my mind hadn’t jumped to the idea of him being a walker yet. When Darryl found him…there was an audible gasp in our living room.
This season has really been about loyalties, redemption and heroics. Axel and Oscar, T-Dogg, Andrea, Michionne, Merle. All of them had to prove themselves to the prison group and ultimately did so (to be fair only the viewers know about Andrea’s attempt).
I was sad to see Merle go. He was becoming more and more interesting as details were teased out through his conversations at the prison, unfortunately most of them occurring last night. Admitting he never killed anyone until he met the Governor and the way Michionne pointed out the problems with that, really hit home. Their journey together was the catalyst for his final act of heroics.
Having recently re-watched The Road to Perdition I can’t help but see the parallels. So much has happened on the road between Woodbury and the prison this season. I don’t know if they are trying to tell us something or not.
The previews tell us that the big battle will happen next week. I can’t imagine everyone making it out of the prison alive but who can we bear to lose? My early thoughts were Herschel and Beth (Beth gets killed and Herschel goes out in a blaze of glory in his grief). I’m also worried we might lose Glenn or Maggie after their engagement. That commitment might have been a type of closure provided by the writers. Or Darryl could get careless in a need for revenge over Merle.
If the Governor is killed next week (as many people assume) who is the likely candidate? My money is still on Milton, but Tyreese is also a logical candidate.
