    Jesus,
I remember when my folks called the schoold and TOLD the school I was not going to be in school for a couple of days for “insert reason”. There was no request, there were informed. I had to do the homework and take any missed exams, but that was assumed.

This is why I wouldn’t have my kids in a public school.Report

I don’t understand how a school doesn’t have a policy for excused absences. I’ve dealt with dozens of different schools and i’ve never heard of such a thing. Is there something more about the school or any reason why they don’t have a policy for excusing some absences?Report

I have to ask for more details too. Something sounds very off and the petition provides no reference for comparison. Are students missing a week or more? What procedures does the school follow before these ISSs? Is that common for an absence to go immediately to a suspension? What efforts have been made to communicate the situation at home to the school?

I know I work in a very very good district but I as a teacher would have real problems if this was happening to one of my students.Report

The student handbook is available at http://www.hsart.org/Staff/HPSStudentParentHandbook2012-13.pdf . Pages 12-13 cover excused and unexcused absences. If children are being punished for attending funerals, etc. then the administration is going against their own policies.
