Back in my day we didn’t have any fancy retina displays. We had to make due with our old wood burning retinas if were lucky enough to have one.Report

I stopped earning a living as a commercial photographer sometime around 1994, and have not done any “intentional” photography until this recent purchase of a Lumix G2. A month or so in, the biggest change is in thinking about where the photographs I take are going to appear, and how they are going to function in those venues.

I do not have any grand theories about this, not yet at least. But I do have this observation:

Between going out and taking the photos, coming home and editing (selecting, adjusting exposure, cropping) it takes me about as long to produce on “League-worthy” image as it does for me to write, re-write, and copy edit a League-worthy 1000 word post.

As matter of investment of my time, this makes photography a much better investment, for two reasons:

      1) I can use the photo in about 6 different places on the internet.

      2) The photo has both more stopping power, and takes less time to be “read”, appreciated, and responded to (“Like”).

Of course just as not everything yields to words (my films, for example) not everything is best expressed in images either. Megan McArdle had a post yesterday about electric cars and carbon tax. We faced this question quite directly when selecting auxiliary power for MON TIKI, and the reason why we made the choice we made are interesting, or at least I think I can write an interesting essay about it.Report
