Death comes to everyone… but to some people it hits harder than others. A friend of mine has seen nearly all of his friends die over the years…

About four years ago, he got a Christmas card from Baghdad — having not heard from the friend for six months, he thought she was probably dead (http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/).

Within the past year, two very dear friends have passed away — their deaths resting lightly on my heart, though this world will sorely miss them. A friend of mine buried a teenage daughter he’d barely seen… The world will be a poorer and more bitter place for her passing.

I went to my first funeral when I was 4, my mom’s dear spinster aunt. There wasn’t another death in the family until I was 18 (1984), when both my father’s parents died in quick succession. Then another long gap until my mother’s mother died in 2005.

But nothing lasts forever. This is a new part of life, and life is for the living, no?
