Does the intersection of Springsteen and Reagan seem that surprising? I’m pretty sure pining for a lost America has been one of the defining staples of rock music: Johnny Cash and Nixon; Newt Gingrich and R.E.M.; Sarah Palin and … Wilco. Heck, with The Kinks, britpop, and recently The Arctic Monkeys (to name a few) even the US doesn’t have a monopoly on mourning lost youth and greatness.

I would love to know if this is the case for non-English speaking rock music as well. The French, to the best of my knowledge, mainly sing about doing LSD and the benefits of incest. What about Arabic rock?Report
