Yeah, I saw her as saying that order will arise spontaneously if all the meddlers buzz off. I’d say it’s also never a good idea to jump at debunking someone because you’ve noticed their ideas are popular.Report

First time posting on this blog — although I’ve also enjoyed reading some of your previous comments on urbanism.

It’s interesting that so many myths about Jane Jacobs have now, especially since her death, apparently become the conventional wisdom about her — automatically accepted by (misguided) admirers and (misguided) detractors alike! Nice to see that others have noticed that, as Yogi Berra might say, “Jane Jacobs didn’t actually write everything that she ‘wrote.’ ”

Hope those who are interested will get a chance to read my most recent comments along these lines in my two comments in the “Enough Already with Jane Jacobs” thread (See the “Comments” tab.) Currently my comments are are the end of the thread. My first comment, which is in two parts, is dated, 7/2/10, 11:45 p.m.; my second comment, which is in three parts, is dated 7/3/10, 12:50 p.m.

Also, I have a number of similar comments in the “Gentrification and Its Discontents” thread (which are comments upon an original post by Benjamin Schwarz) on the Atlantic Monthly online website.

P.S. — I notice that one cannot, so it seems, access the comments that have been posted to “Enough With Jane Jacobs Already” from the link that’s provided in Austin Bramwell’s post. In order to access the comments, one has to access the article independently, via a search engine like Google (typing into the search box, for example, “Andrew Manshel Jane Jacobs”).
