Good post. The amount of obfuscation and self-justifying BS that went into that latest non-apology apology is truly astounding. It’s like they’re congenitally incapable of admitting a mistake.Report

I agree with everything in this post, except one thing. This is not “another embarrassing moment” for Gawker Media. In order to feel embarrassed they would have to be capable of feeling shame. For all of their journalistic pretensions, I don’t think they can feel shame.Report

“you can’t be a trove of unsubstantiated rumors and innuendos at one moment and then a publisher of serious reportage the next. It doesn’t work that way.”

I am not so sure. In fact, I think it pretty much does work that way. Lots of “serious” media outlets have trashy elements, and at least try to walk the line.

In fact, doesn’t it seem that MOST media outlets, especially ones that have anything to do with politics, entertainment, etc., walk this line all the time?

I agree that Deadspin takes this maneuver to some new levels. And I don’t like the site at all. But plenty of outlets like Vanity Faire do serious journalism alongside peurile rumor-mongering. Remember… some of the best long-form journalism of the 20th Century came from Playboy, Esquire and GQ. It just happened to be featured next to airbrushed pictures of boobies.Report

On the other hand, what’s now posted at the site of the original embarrassment

probably serves most purposes that we’d want an apology to serve.Report
